Our Story

Town Web Design is a turnkey web design and hosting solution built specifically for municipalities. The company was founded in Summer 2007, but the idea for municipal design & hosting first came to life many years prior. In Summer 2001, a municipality in Dustin’s hometown (Town of Sevastopol) requested a quote to design a web site, and contracted with him to build their site for $1,000. The site for the Town of Sevastopol in Door County, Wisconsin was the first municipal site in the entire county at the time (and is still a customer!)

Back at that first meeting more than a decade ago, the Town Clerk listed the types of content that needed to be published for public access. This list included forms & permits, election information, an FAQ page, and of course, regular board meeting minutes and agendas that needed to be updated each month. The best solution for the town was to have a “database-driven” site. This was a unique solution at the time since many sites built during the web’s early years were “static” HTML sites and were built without a backend database. Therefore the majority of sites had to be updated manually and often required a “webmaster” to take care of the technical editing and updating. Keep in mind, this was a full two years before the popular software WordPress was invented!

The original solution for the Town of Sevastopol was coded in PHP with a MySQL database and offered an Administration area for the Clerk to access to post regular meeting minutes and agendas. It freed up the Clerk to post meeting content in just 20 seconds.A little while later, another neighboring community (Town of Jacksonport) liked the design of the Town of Sevastopol municipal web site. The Town Board wanted to provide good information to the residents and the Clerk heard that it was an easy solution to use, and shortly thereafter the Town of Jackonsport became Customer #2!

The Town Board wanted to provide good information to the residents and the Clerk heard that it was an easy solution to use, and shortly thereafter the Town of Jackonsport became Customer #2!

In order to provide more functionality, the Town Board at Jacksonport requested having a visual Calendar of Events added to their site. This was custom-integrated into their solution, and also added to Sevastopol’s site since it was a useful feature to have.

This was essentially the start of developing a municipal solution built for Clerks by direct input from Clerk, and the beginning of creating our custom software Content Management Solution, TownCMS!Over the years since those first two municipal customers came onboard, TownCMS developed into something more robust and for a wider variety of municipal customers. The team expanded to include developers who could build a solution that added and improved features, but which still stayed true to end-user ease of use. New graphic designers were hired to provide a professional look & feel to the front-end aesthetics of the town sites.

In order to provide a solution that could serve the growing needs of municipal customers across the US, a new infrastructure and hosting platform was built in 2007. Town Web Design partnered with Rackspace Managed Hosting to provide the incredibly robust hosting solution using a dedicated server.

With a complete solution in place from the software (TownCMS), to the hardware (web servers), the focus for Town Web Design was to be completely customer-focused. All municipal customers get FREE technical support and training!
